Mom Entrepreneur : Natural Wonders Soap N' More
I think it is a fair assumption to make that most stay at home moms would love to start their own home-based business. And of course, so many women are doing just that. If you are in this category, but need some ideas on what business to start, take a peek at this mom's story. She was able to take a need in her family, and from that, start her own business to fill that need.
Jenny Reynolds young daughter developed eczema, and in finding a soap that would help her daughter's skin, a new business idea was born.
After first trying the non- steroid cream her daughter's doctor prescribed, Jenny researched the ingredients and found that some of them may not actually be safe. So the Lafayette mom decided to try natural soaps that she found on a site for natural mother. And she was hooked.
Reynolds continued to research natural soaps and found hat she could make these at home with ingredients she chose.. Chamomile tea, tea tree oil, organic avocado oil, and cosmetic grade olive oil were the ingredients used in making the first soaps, and Reynolds credits her natural soaps for curing problem skin for the entire family.
Reynolds has now turned her hobby into a business called Natural Wonders Soaps 'N More. It takes her about an hour to make 100 bars.
After her two kids go to bed, Reynolds and her husband get to work, mixing and pouring.
"We had a lot of laundry soap to start out with because it didn't work so well the first time. When we first started it took us hours and hours, but we've got it down pretty good now," she said.
"You just take water and lye together, and then you take your mixture of oils and blend them together," explains the mom entrepreneur. After pouring them into molds, next comes the waiting game. The bars take up to six weeks to firm up completely.
And Reynolds has found a market for the products. She is a regular at the Lafayette Farmers' Market where her bars of soap, foot scrub, lip balm, and lotions sell quickly.
"We have the essential oils for the people who like people who like things that are more natural. We do a lot of tea tree oil, peppermint and we have our fragrance oils that are more highly scented but they aren't as natural," she said.
Reynolds says lemon and almond are very popular. People also like the coffee soap that can be used in the kitchen to get rid of strong odors like garlic. She said she enjoys helping other families go green and more natural.

Stay at Home Moms Wanted For Pet Sitting Company

An at home dog babysitting company, Sleepover Rover ( don't you think that is a great name?), needs stay at home moms, dads, grandparents, etc. to be hosts for in home dog stays.
You need to be a full time stay at home mom, work at home mom ( or dad, or grandparent etc ) that will basically be able to care for their doggie client full time. Short absences up to 4 hours are fine...it's just not a good fit for those that have full time job outside of the home.
If you become a host for Sleepover Rover, you will always get to meet the clients before committing to be their dog sitter. Typical stays are from 3-10 days. Hosts make from $22.00/day and up. Pet safe yards are a plus but not required.
Right now Sleepover Rover is serving these areas:
* Los Angeles, CA
* San Diego, CA
* Las Vegas, NV
* Denver, CO
* Phoenix, AZ
* Tucson, AZ
And while I think their need is in the Los Angeles area right now, if you are interested in this working from home opportunity, you should still check it out and apply if any of the other areas are good for you.
It looks easy to apply as a dog sitter...you can do so right online, and there is also a phone number listed on their website if you'd rather just call to get started.
Good Luck!

The Stay At Home Survival Guide

While doing my usual morning cruise around the internet today, I came across a wonderful blog written by a funny, witty and hard-working mommy.
Mommy Writer Blog is written by Bethany Hiiola, and she is, as she refers to herself, " a mommy by day and a writer by night." Bethany writes things that I swear I have had in my head so often. Balancing motherhood and work (be it from home or at an office) is like the eternal challenge we face, but to read the craziness of daily life as a mom from the perspective of Bethany is like having someone else tell you, "It's ok,--I'm right there in the trenches with you--you are not alone!"
Bethany has a review on her blog about a book titled, "THE STAY-AT-HOME SURVIVAL GUIDE: Field-tested strategies for staying smart, sane, and connected while caring for your kids" by Melissa Stanton. According to Bethany, what this book does best is just share with you that--guess what--staying home as a mom is a full time gig. One that isn't always pretty. Sometimes sucks. But in the end, can be survivable and fun.
If you want to be, currently are, or once were, a stay at home mom doing the juggling multi-tasking dance of laundry, cleaning, feeding, napping, bathing, dressing, hygiene, appointments, games, school, crafts, cooking, Bethany says this delightful book is a must read.
Bethany herself wanted to read and review the book because as she puts it, she'd love more than anything to "land on the other side of the fence. Chuck the paying corporate day job to stay home with my kids."
And while The Stay at Home Survival Guide is certainly not a tell-all guide for leaving work and becoming a stay at home mom, it does share what other moms did. What Melissa, the author herself, did. What others could do. And by all means, what any mom might do.
It is so worth reading the full review by Bethany...and it is very worthwhile to take a break and enjoy this very fun mommy blog as well!

Coupon Finesse Saves Big Bucks!

There is an amazing article that I came across today about Chrissy Thompson, wife and mom of three kids, and her coupon strategies. I am not a coupon user, but I always admire those people who are so organized who cut, compare, and ultimately save a lot of money!
Anyway, in this article, a news crew followed Chrissy around for a day as she did her shopping. The deals she pulled off with her coupons were pretty exciting. For example, at Target, Chrissy bought over $380 worth of merchandise, and actually spent a total of .02 cents!! Wow.
It does take Chrissy an hour a week, approximately, to find, cut and organize coupons for a shopping trip that will take her about three to four hours and involves three to seven stores in the area.
For this stay at home Mom, coupons help the family live a better life. "It's the difference in my children being able to have the things they want and being able to have a decent place to live and get the bills paid." says Chrissy very matter of factly.
I am impressed. I almost feel badly that I am not trying harder to watch for coupons and deals. Think I may just have to give this coupon game thing a try.
Read the full article about Chrissy and how she puts coupons to excellent use , and check out some of Chrissy's favorite web sites for coupons and savings. Enjoy!

Stay At Home Moms Need To Watch Out For The Rut!

Being a full time mommy at home has it's rewards, to be sure, but it also has it's drawbacks. When you combine the 'staying at home' with the 'trying to work from home' solution, things can get a bit hairy, at least for me.
I find my daily routine going in one of two ways: either I get glued to my laptop early on in the morning and end up more stressed than ever as I try to get my work done and keep my two little guys happy, or I spend the day cleaning, playing with the boys, and shooting my laptop alternating looks of yearning and of annoyance that it is there on my desk taunting me! (really--my laptop is obnoxious!)
I can never seem to find the happy balance that I dream of in my sleep. Ack. But whichever path a certain day will end up following, there is little in the way of changes or newness to my routines. I rarely put on make-up ( aren't you so happy to know that?), or put on much more than old jeans and an equally old shirt. And aside from going up and down my stairs like a gazillion times a day to get a diaper, find a lost bottle, chase the new puppy, save my one year old before he tumbles down the latest climbing structure he has devised, and so on, I can't say I exercise.
So when I read an article about stay at home moms and the ruts we can fall into, I really took note. The author, Kimberly Danger, makes the point that we need to nurture ourselves ( I think we all know this, but most of us tend to 'skip' on the self-nurturing anyway), in order to improve our outlook on life and feel better about ourselves. Kimberly lists about 25 suggestions of things to try to bring some newness to our daily routine and at the same time help improve our own confidence and self-esteem.
I read though her list, and while I know I won't be doing everything on there, a couple of things caught my eye and made me nod my head and say "yea..I can do that!"
So here's Kimberly's list, see if there is anything that grabs you, and guess which ones I did today! I did three things on the list, and I added one not on the list-- Put on make-up! And it felt good too, lol, and it even made my husband look twice (really!).

My Credit Score Needs Help

Ack! As much as I love being a stay-at-home mom, I have to admit that I sometimes wonder what it would be like if we had two full paychecks coming in each month. How much would our financial stress be alleviated? But, I know in my heart being at home with my little ones is where I want to be right now. And so we make sacrifices.
My credit score needs to be improved in order that we can do some refinancing--mainly our mortgage. That would help tremendously with our finances. So, I've been surfing about the web, and found some good information at a site, that explains about credit scores and ways to improve your scores so that Home Mortgage and Auto Refinance can be options for us. Actually, this site had a lot of information and resources and easy to understand articles about family spending, budgeting and saving.
Improving our finances while remaing a stay at home mom are two of my goals for the New Year.
